Blackheath Village Society Minutes 3rd August 2026

Minutes of the Meeting Held at Theobalds on Monday 3rd August 2026 at 7:30 pm
Present: David, Paul, Simon, Andy, Ralph, and Max. Apologies: Laura and Anne

1. The minutes of the last meeting held on 12th May 2026 were agreed with the following
points arising:
a) David will speak to Jayne Barlow about the archive photographs to be reinstated when
he next meets her on an informal basis.
b) Simon confirmed that the lean-to against the Village Hall will be completed in the near
future.
c) Paul did send a detailed history of The Villagers Pub to the democratic reporter at
Waverley Borough Council, but no articles have been published by the Council. He did
send a reminder and will report back if anything is published.
d) Paul spoke to Sophie about expanding the coffee/tea facilities in the car park adjacent
to the old pub. She was very interested in purchasing a larger horse box (or similar) with
a covered area and the opportunity to employ someone to help her maximise sales of
coffee, tea and light snacks.

2. Barn Dance
It was confirmed that the barn dance organised by the Cricket Club will be held on Friday
7th August 2026. This will be supported by the Blackheath Village Society and Simon
has confirmed strong interest from both members of the Cricket Club and village
residents. Brochures have been distributed to all residents and we have agreed to
publish this event on the WhatsApp group and advertise it on our website to increase the
numbers as much as possible.

3. Summer BBQ
This will be held on the Bank Holiday Monday 31st August 2026. Paul confirmed that
entertainers and the Punch & Judy have been organised. Simon confirmed that
Graham, Jackie, Ken and Jane will organise the children’s games. Simon will buy a
rounders set for the afternoon, and Ralph has agreed to play at the event. Paul will
arrange for the delivery of 20 cooked chickens and 100 sausages to be cooked on the
BBQ. Ralph will arrange for the vegan meals. We will also have pre-cooked baked
potatoes, along with bread rolls for the sausages. As before, residents will bring salads
and desserts, which should be enough food for the afternoon.
Simon will arrange with Charlie to complete the flyer, which we will both email and
personally deliver to all of the residents in the village.

4. AGM
It was confirmed that the meeting will now be held on Monday 14th September 2026 at
the Cricket Club, which Simon confirms will be available for the meeting.
Paul will send out an email and post the details on the website and village noticeboard
during the latter part of week ending 21st August 2026 to provide all residents with due
notice in line with our Constitution.
We will make it as informal as possible and encourage as many young residents as
possible, including any families who have recently moved to the village, to attend.

It was confirmed that David, Paul and Laura will be stepping down from the Committee.
Andy has agreed to take on the role of Treasurer, and several Committee members have
spoken with residents who may be interested in joining the BVS and taking on various
roles. We will speak to as many people as we can during the course of the summer
BBQ.

5. WhatsApp Group
We appreciate Nicola Duffey's help in managing the new WhatsApp group and Simon
confirmed that she was fulfilling a very important role on behalf of the village. We will
promote this facility on the website and also include access to the new WhatsApp group
at the bottom of every email sent to the residents of Blackheath Village.

6. May Day Fair
It was unanimously agreed that we would hold next year's May Day Fair on Monday 3rd
May 2027. The Committee was very enthusiastic about holding this event, but it was
recognised that we need more residents to help organise everything in the run-up to the
day and to ensure that the village and the Village Hall are clean and tidy after the event.

7. Welcome Pack
It was agreed that we should reintroduce a flyer for all new residents to Blackheath and
produce a physical brochure listing all our achievements over the years. Simon and
Ralph will drive the project with the aim of producing a draft document for the AGM for
residents to consider. Hopefully, Graham Webb will also be able to assist in any wording
required to enhance the presentation.

8. Wonersh Parish Council
Max confirmed that the Wildfire and Management of the Heathland presentation was
discussed at the open meeting at Blackheath Village Hall on Monday 13th July 2026. An
updated version will be published, which will include an emergency plan to use the
Blackheath Village Hall together with the Shamley Green and Wonersh Village Hall’s.

9. Village Hall
No points were discussed in connection with the Village Hall

10. Cricket Club
Simon confirmed that the week commencing Monday 3rd August 2026 is cricket week
and all residents of Blackheath are invited to drinks and evening meals offered every
night through to the Barn Dance being held on Friday 7th August 2026. The Billie
Hockley Cup is being played on Friday 7th August 2026, and it is hoped we will have as
many people as possible attending the match.
Simon also reported the excellent news that the Blackheath Cricket Club Senior Team
won their recent match against Goatacre Cricket Club in the National Village Cup semi-
final. The final is being played against Cuckney Cricket Club on Sunday the 6th

September 2026 at Lords Cricket Ground. It is hoped that as many residents as possible
will attend this and support their local club.
We are greatly encouraged by the number of young players that have come up through
the ranks and are now part of the senior team who have made it to the National Village
Cup Final.

11. Any Other Business
a) Paul outlined to the committee that our Treasurer Anne has been very ill and spent a
number of weeks at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and is now convalescing at home.
It was agreed that the BVS would send her a get-well card together with flowers and
hope she will have a speedy recovery.

12. Next Meeting
It was agreed that the next meeting would be held at Theobalds on Monday 7th
September at 7:30 pm.
